Thanks to @Randy Abercrombie for my 14,000 like. I've had this coin for a month but was saving it for this moment. It's a 2000 Maryland State Quarter. The reverse is missing the clad layer. It's special as I was born in Baltimore Maryland. Lovely in hand but it's raw. I may have to get it graded later in life.
Just start or keep looking for one. They are out there. Mine is not slabbed but it's obvious. I don't think it was a bad price either. Just buy it from a reputable source.
Yes. Missing the layer means it is thinner. The dies are calibrated to strike a certain thickness, and if it is thinner some areas won't be as defined. Also, clad layers aren't uniformly the same thickness. Sometimes one area is thicker than another, thus weakness in one area and not in another. This is not the result of a grease strike through.
I'm working at getting another coin that is missing the clad on one side. If I do get it I'll do a post on it when it arrives. I will say that's it's not a Quarter.
Congrats on your 14,000 likes, @Collecting Nut. Nice missing clad Maryland. Here is an off-center piece to celebrate your milestone.
