Must say I'm not surprised to hear about the quarters. I went to a bowling alley once with the sole purpose to hit the quarter changing machine. I got $50 worth and there wasn't one keeper! Even the newer state quarters were worn down. I think the trick is getting the rolls of quarters from an old source which have been turned into a bank but how many people actually maintain 15 and 20 year old quarter change jars?? Oooo do note Spider this is my 400th post!! Guess your like me in the way you like to keep track of the number as well.

Omgosh 30 years of pennies!! They'd have tons of wheat pennies by todays comparisons dating to the early 1910s! I think the wheat penny removal craze didn't hit until the late 1970s so you missed some true gems.

Omgosh---Even earlier than I had thought. I have a tiny story for you. A year ago I went to the bank about 30 minutes before closing right. Well I had a total of 5 dollars with me and it just so happens that the teller I went to had about 45 rolls of pennies on her table. I asked if someone just turned them in and with a tired look she said yes. Well I said "10 rolls of pennies please" and the teller next to her quietly said "lucky" right but anyways I went to the store where my mom was and while I was waiting in there I was trying to check a couple of them and in the couple I slightly checked there were wheat pennies!!! Quite a few per roll right. Well once I got home I saw I had something good as there were uncirculated pennies dating back to 1959! This was clearly an old source even though they went up to 2001. If I had known of this source I woulda brought more than $5 with me that night and a box! Suffice to say that in the future I only got about 2 more rolls from this precious source. No telling what true rarity may have lurked in those rolls as I read a message from a guy who found a 1914D penny in 1961.

I usually find one good keeper quarter in about four rolls. There was a nice AU 1987-P just this week and got a VF '68 a few weeks back. There have also been a few great varieties recently, most notably a VF small bust '85-P (this is about the fifteenth one in 25,000 coins checked)

Yes there are winners out there. A year ago I got a BU grade 1987D quarter from a vending machine. It's only problem is a tiny nick in the cheek. I also found a nice 78D and 85D in vending machines about 9 months ago. Almost forgot but I got a fully uncirculated 91D quarter from a water machine a while back as well. It is so well preserved, just like the 87D, that the edges are still very sharp and orange and as you know that wears off the fastest or most notibly. Strange thing is I have never found a nice one from a roll of quarters or from quarter changing machines.
