Some of you are working on the 12 Caesars and some have all 12 in Gold, Silver, i don't have all 12. this is the 11th. coin, not in any order, but the 12th will be the hardest for me, which is Otho. I'm doing them in Bronze. i just pick up Tiberius, after a couple Months wait. So post any Tiberius or S-C or any of the 12 Caesars coins you have... Tiberius 80-81..AD. AE, As. Restoration Series by Titus. Obv. bare head of Tiberius left. Rev. large S-C single legend on Rev. 26mm x 10.3g. Lite brown patina.. Sellers notes and photo, much better in hand.. This is one rare occasions where a coin was struck posthumously for an Emperor who was not other wise defied. Titus(Vespasian's Son) commissioned a board Comm. a series in 80 AD. issuing coinage of all his good predecessors- not only Emperors but family members like Drusus, Agrippa and Germanicus. This Series faithfully reproduced coinage struck over the past century and all are very stylistically similar to the originals. the only difference was the addition to the legion on the Rev. side, which would name Titus as Emperor and mention the restoration in some fashion.
Great coin, John! One more to go...everybody seems to struggle with Otho, but I have a simple solution for that: just get a second mortgage.
nice ENG...sweet portrait! can you believe i only had this one until yesterday? just picked up another, i'll post pics later.
My tray. Otho can be found cheap with patience. Mine was little over $200 shipped. There isnt any bronzes of him unless you go the provincial route.
Ya big John, i think i'll sell one of my kids.. Very nice Chris, sweet coin can't wait to see your new one.. Mat awesome tray, i will be going provincial, then off to the silvers..
It may just be me but the Provincials I have seen of Otho rarely look much like the portraits of him we see on the denarii. Also, the most common Provincials seem to be the billon tets. If I were trying to do a set in each metal, II'd be tempted to do the bronze as a Paduan just to make the point that Otho had no Roman bronzes. I only have one Otho - a fourree. A challenge: what is the fewest coins you need to represent the 12 Caesars? Many of them are available with two on one coin. There is one coin with three.
You gave the answer already, I assume....its the tetradrachms due to some like nero having dual portraits with augustus, claudius and so on. Could be wrong though.

Neither Otho nor Julius Caesar issued bronze portrait coins through any mints that would be classified as "imperial" mints (i.e., listed in RIC). My dealer once sent me a provincial bronze of Otho that I decided not to add to my collection since, as Doug observes above, it bore no resemblance whatsoever to Otho's portrait on his aurei and denarii. That's a very interesting challenge you issue, Doug. If I recall correctly, there is one coin of Vespasian with his two sons on the reverse, so that one coin would knock off three emperors with one coin. I have an Augustus aurei with Julius Caesar on the reverse, so that knocks off another two. But I don't see how to represent all 12 Caesars with just three coins, if that's what you meant by "There is one set with three."
I got tongue tied. There is one coin with three - the Flavian mentioned by Ides. Augustus doubled with Caesar and Tiberius as well as Caligula and Nero (if you count the provincial of Nero). There is a Claudius and Nero and at least a Provincial for Tiberius/Caligula.

There's something inexplicably cool about having a 12 Caesars collection of all the same denomination, especially denarii. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Many times, denarii seem to be regarded as the "poor cousins" of other denominations, but taken together as a set, they achieve a sort of "presence" that any individual coin doesn't quite manage. Taken together, this set certainly rises to that level.
I think the theoretical answer to this challenge is eight coins, but there are multiple ways to do this, Here's one way (only one of these coins is in my collection): (1) Octavian (Augustus Caesar) & Julius Caesar: (2) Any Tiberius (3) Any Caligula (4) Claudius and Nero: (5) Any Galba (6) Any Otho (7) Any Vitellius (8) Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian:
