Metal detecting find of Anglo Saxon coins found just before Christmas in the UK 5251 pieces featuring kings Ethelred and Canute described as mirror like condition http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ins-worth-1million-buried-farmer-s-field.html
Dave? Don't tell Frank (Treashunt). He'll be on the next flight to the UK detecting and making a nuisance of himself..... Absolutely extraordinary find!
incredible find. thanks for posting this. I always enjoy hearing about people finding treasured coins. amazing. historically off the charts.
Does anyone who collects these beauties know what it's going to do to the cost and availability of them?
5,251 of them.... yup the price just plummeted. I hope they keep it in a collection that travels around the world.
Very cool find! Thanks for posting DaveyDempsey. Makes me want to buy a metal detector and travel to jolly old England.
A court coroner will decide if they are treasure trove (which they are) Usually the British Museum or the local museum will buy them for their market value, the finder and the landowner will split the proceeds, tax free.
They had lain undisturbed for 1000 years, UNSLABBED in perfect condition. They will remain UNSLABBED too.
I'm okay with them not being slabbed, but shame that I'll never get to see one unless I'm in the museum that buys them.
a good point for discussion, what should happen to them ? I went to the taunton museum to see the frome hoard,a large number of people were looking and enjoying the hoard or would they be better in private hands around the world ? I don't know what do others think
If there are 1,000 of the exact same coin, couldn't you get the same enjoyment in a museum looking at one or two of the best and worst graded examples and reading a history/bio? It's not like we have the time to look at 1,000 of the exact same coin. Perhaps divide the hoard up, send it to several museums, and allow a certain number of them to be privately sold at auction?
yes but seeing them in a large pile that is the largest Anglo Saxon discovery ever would be very impressive to look at. IMO
they are not the same coins.the hoard is just being looked at, at least two kings aethelred 11 and cnut, there could well be many mints and moneyers.I cant wait to see the full report.
Sorry, I was generalizing to help push the point along. More than a handful of the same coin becomes redundant.
