I am not a bill collector (ha...that sounded funny!). However, I have been coin roll searching halves. As I cash them in, I am getting various $100 bills. Can somebody give me the type of bills to look out for regarding $100 bills? Or as least point me to a previous thread/link to help me out.

So far, I have received two "older style" bills. One is 1990 and one is 1974.

Thanks for any and all help.

With modern series $100s (1950 and later), there are a few things to look out for:

    - Star notes: The serial number suffix ends with a star *
    - Error notes: Gutter folds, butterfly folds, misaligned overprints, obstructions and board breaks causing part of the design to be missing, under and over-inkings, stuck and mismatched serial numbers, etc.
    - Mules: The front and back plate numbers are different sizes; the latest series with possible mules are 1950 series with plate numbers that are larger on the front than on the back

    - Condition: Condition is vital. If your notes do not have any of the above features, then you will only get a premium if the notes are uncirculated. That means no folds, creases, pin holes, tears, wrinkles, etc.

There are various levels of uncirculated, ranging from 60 to 70 in grade. If you get the notes graded, then the higher the grade, the higher the premium you can get. If the notes are uncirculated but raw, you'll probably only get a few dollars over face value for them. But if you sell them on eBay, the fees will eat up any of your profits.

Buy a price guide....even if it's a used guide from 2010 or 2011. Use it to see what series and districts to look for.
