Hello all, just wondering if you could provide a possible "purchase price" if you saw this and the person had it for sale. Pictures arent real good, but there is a partial transfer on the back of the bill. Just curious.
You mean to tell me I could get an error like that for $10-$15?? I wish! I can't find any errors similar to that for less than $60. I've been on the lookout though...
Not sure on authenticity one thing that doesn't look quite right to me is the name plate under the portrait. It doesn't look like it says Hamilton in the photo. The other is that when the name plate appears on the back most photo examples I can find also have the treasurer and secretaries signatures showing also. As for grade it's like anything condition is factor one, how much of the design is transfered over is two, series/date coupled with how many are known is three and denomination of the bill is the final lesser factor. Although I've seen $5 pieces from the 80's list at $75-100 in F/VF circulated and yet same era and condition $10 notes valued at $30-$55 the only difference was how much of the image was visible and how defined it was. So IMO a genuine 1974 $10 VG note only partial (top half) of the image transfered I'd say $25-35. Top half better quality you're almost $75 and a full transfer in VF $90-100. If it were mine and was looking to just sell it no attachement to it. I'd ebay it for $25 start and BIN of $40-50 and hope for the best.
Series of the note and denomination don't play too much of a factor in error notes compared to the degree of the error and the condition of the note. Since your example is heavily creased and would fall in VF on the best of days (IMO, it is in Fine condition based on the rust stains), you would have to then look at the amount of the offset error and its darkness. Your example has about a 25% light offset, so its value is significantly lower than an offset that would be darker or cover more of the note. With that in mind, I am inclined to agree with those who said value is about $20 - $25 max.
Can you tell if it's a direct transfer or an indirect transfer? The dirct transfer are much harder to find and are worth more. Hold on to it. The value will not be much in this condition. It is still a nice find. It's about a 50% transfer.
