Hi All, looking for your opinions on this one. I am considering purchasing it, but I need a grade to give me a better idea of what I would pay for it. I would appreciate your insights! Thanks in advance.
I've never studied this type, but off the top of my head: * What's with the black line under her chin? That's gonna hurt. * I see quite a few scratches on the obverse * Dirt inside the mint mark on the reverse may indicate an old cleaning? (experts?) * Possible rubs in the reverse fields? * I think I see wear in the feathers (obverse and reverse) I'm gonna guess VF30/EF40 but will defer to those who know the series better. I realize that you may be in a coin shop, etc., but better lighting and a straight-on shot would help (the top of both of your pics seems to be a bit out of focus)
Thanks for your response. This coin is from an online auction, so i do not know what the black mark is under the chin. I tend to agree that the blemishes on the obverse are significant. I was going to say EF40 also. I was hoping for AU
I would never buy online with sub-par pictures such as these. My eyes aren't as sharp as many others here (thanks, @Santinidollar !), but I don't see any luster, so I think AU is out of the question. (I'm happy to be corrected, though!) $10 Indians are not that hard to find (IMHO) as opposed to some other U.S. types, so as Santini said, keep looking.
I think it could grade anywhere from XF details to AU55, so it's a gamble. Why do you want to buy a raw gold coin? Because it's cheap? And why is it cheap...? Just sayin'.
The coin retains AU details, but lacks sufficient luster to attain that grade. Those two facts taken together lead me to believe the coin is cleaned.
That's an NTC slab - they're the only ones I know who use the green insert. I'll bet cash the real grade is anything except what it's marked.
Good catch. That merely reinforces @ToughCOINS' impression of the coin, and we'll figure the coin for a typical "NYC ignored the cleaning" 55-58. Of all the basement slabbers, I despise NTC the most. He could have made a strong living as a legit numismatist and dealer, and chose the Dark Side.
I see plenty of luster. The harsh angle and poor lighting make it difficult to make out. That does not mean that it has not been cleaned, though.
