This came today. It is also canceled like the $2 is. There is a little mystery about what the stamp says on the back. The first few words are "Pay to the" and I cannot make any of the rest out. Maybe you can see something I cannot. Best Regards ~ Darryl
Thanks guys! I will have to see if we have a black light at work. I agree rusty. Given the times I am sure they did what was easiest. Still cool to be 2 notes from a complete set with my sights set on one of them.
Are the images above photos or scans? They seem somewhat soft in focus and contrasty making it hard to run filters and play with color levels in Photoshop in order to read that stamp on the back. Maybe a high res scan of the stamp area only will be of some use to those of us who can play around with Photoshop to coax some more details out of the stamp. UV light (black light) may be of some use but it may still be very hard to read against that security pattern printed on the note. Also, try getting a photo of the note back lit. Place the note on a thin piece of paper laid over a sheet of plexi or glass (to diffuse intense light). Then direct lamp light from behind the glass and try to get a detailed photo of the area of the stamp. If you can post some more images like this maybe we can collectively come up with some more details after manipulating the image a little more. I love working on a mystery, it lends more review and scrutiny to the history of the note and may even uncover more paths to learn about the life of notes... the stamp becomes almost like a WG tracking project predecessor. Congrats on the new note.
No comment on the overprint, don't care frankly. But I sure like the printing on that lovely note - and well, of course the vignette in the lower RH corner.
Thanks SM, glad the cut fell below her! The overstamp does not bother me either but curious to what it says. Will do some experiments tonight to try to get better pictures. Thanks!!!
They were photos from a 12 meg camera. Will do some back lighting tonight and try using a tripod. Thanks again for the help guys! Darryl
I like the note Darryl, but I can't decipher the rest of the stamp. It might possibly add a bit of history to it if the entire thing were legible. Nice pickup, especially as a companion note to your first one. Bruce
Thanks Bruce! It is actually now part of a 5 note collection. I need the 50 cent note and 5 dollar note to complete the set. Within three months I hope to have the five dollar note. Will get some flat bed scans hopefully later today.
Oh yeah! That's looking a lot better. Still a few hard-to-read holes on the digital file, particularly that last line which I assume to be a name of a person or company. It appears it may have some abbreviations, here's what I see with notes: 1) Pay to the Order of 2) The National Park Bank, N.Y. [The National Park Bank had Charter #891 - It was liquidated August 24, 1929; Consolidated with #2370 Chase Bank, NY] 3) for acct. office -or- for aocl. of the [aocl = Accumulated Other Comprehensive Loss -- a finance abbreviation] 4) Rev. A H______ . _____ _____ [Cannot really read the last line???]
