I got this dollar bill from the bank today and noticed the ink blotch on the front , I almost just put back into circulation but I wanted to see if you guys think this was an error of some sort or just damaged. Thank you for any help .

Looks like ink from a teller stamp that overshot the strap that was once banding a stack of notes together. not an error.

I see those teller stamps alot. I hate it when they stamp one that I might have otherwise kept.

Any idea on how these marks affect premium? I have never run into one and a teller at my bank has a 1950 $50 in XF to Ch CU that I am interested in, but it has one of these marks on the face. Pick it up, or let it go?

If you are getting it for face then I would get it and check to see what the value if after the fact. If there is little or no additional value, you can always offer it up here on ct or spend it worse case.

that is definitely a teller stamp. i know that mark very well(worked at a bank for many years.) i had seen so many nice notes stamped like that. it breaks my heart:eek: it would only hurt the value if anything. i would say toss that baby back :thumb: keep on fishing

Yeah, I'm on the fence with it. It's worth about $150 in the condition before the mark. Hmm...I might just go for it and ask my coin shop dealer what he thinks as a second opinion.

Depends on the collector and their budget. Those who want the finest will not buy it with marks like that, unless it's excessively rare, that is when most seem to compromise the quality level when -- scarcity means big-$$$ which affects their collecting budget. Each collector considering that note will have a dilemma weighing eye-appeal vs. value. The marks are right in the central area and are very obvious, even one over the portrait itself. I'd say most collectors would pull value back 30-40% if they are putting a bid on that note. Those with less conditional concerns just looking to fill a hole may be less concerned with precise value but also willing to pay less due to tighter budgets, so the value could be the same to them, much lowered, just for slightly different reasoning. It really comes down to eye appeal and scarcity. Poor eye appeal and a common note will not get me to react as quickly as would a bargain price on a scarce note with problems. I know this isn't a scientific explanation and I'm rambling on here but I hope it helps offer my perspective/thoughts on your questions.

Pick it up if you need it. Pick it up and try to find a collector that needs it if you don't. Pick it up to keep it in the collecting realm.

    Numbers...where are you? :D
    Or Lettow maybe :D

And Krispy I read the "mat offset error" :p I was just wondering if anyone had seen an error like that before as after a bit of searching I came up with nothing. I should have been more detailed in my post.

    Is it rare or valuable?
When you zoom in you can see the green ink looks to be in a fabric pattern or something...looks like a cancer spreading. Kind of cool looking to me.

    Except for this one... ;)

You seem to need info quickly on this, are you thinking to buy this one?

While it doesn't seem that common despite PMG having given it that precise error name-- I couldn't find any other results quickly searching the net. We do see heavily smudged ink smears on notes often enough, usually on sites of dealers and auction houses listing these significant error types. At least I have in seen them in the past, those where no design elements transferred but rather thick green ink smeared over the notes.

I also searched HA archives in the Error note section (over 8000 results to hunt through) but I haven't looked closely at all of them so found no 'mat offset' but plenty of offsets from backs on notes to face of the next note. This $20 1995 FRN (Lot 22179) has the closest looking 'pattern' in the offset like the currencyquest piece.
