I'd like to know the grade of my 1862 $1 coin. What is it in your opinion? I'd like to know. Thanks in advance :)

From the photos, it looks MS to me. The reverse is a little ticky, but the obverse looks very nice. Assuming I am not missing some slight rub, I would venture...MS63. Nice clashing!

Really, MS63? The pictures show lots of luster but there are small areas with darker toning and slight lack of luster. Is this acceptable on an MS-63 coin? Any other opinions?

I'm off to sleep now. Hopefully I'll see a few other opinions when I wake up in the morning :)

    Thanks.

my guess would be MS-62. A few hairlines, but a great strike and nice coin altogether. I like those die clashes too! The toning should not affect the grade at all, and I actually consider it a plus in many cases. Lack of luster might though, and if there is rub, it will drop it to AU-58.

I'm in the either AU58 or MS62 group. Though the coin does seem to have quite a few rim dings. I know the coin is tiny and the pics exaggerate that sort of thing, but this one seems to have alot of marks on the rim, especially on the obverse... could this have been in jewelry at one point maybe??? Pretty coin though :)

I'm thinking it might have been set in a ring. That's about the only thing I can think of that would cause all the stuff going on with the rim.

I'm selling this coin, but I'm wondering if I should get it graded. I've got a best offer of $350 off of eBay and am very tempted to go for it. I bought this coin knowing I could turn it around and make a few bucks. Would I get more than $350 if it were graded?

    $350.00 is low for a 1862
I would have it graded.then the offer may go up 50% or more 1862 is a key year for any coin

1862 is actually not a key, it's one of the most common dates.

It is for civil war buffs anything from 1856-1865.they like or it maybe just here in Alabama.

If it has been used in jewelry, it won't get graded.

I'd say that $350 is probably a pretty fair price. If you paid to have it graded and it went up to a 62 you might get a bit more out of it, but if it came back AU that offer of $350 would go down about $50.

I didn't notice that initially, but I agree. Likely an ex-jewelry piece.

There are some positives with this coin. It's above average strike. This series is notorious for poor strikes; there are mint state coins which barely show the letters "LIBERTY", or letters / numerals in DOLLAR or the date are very weak.

Good luster, although it almost looks cleaned in the pic with the thumb. Maybe that's just the color / lighting.

Is it mint state ? So hard to tell from a photo, but I can see it coming back AU from the TPGs.

I can't see it coming back MS63. Too many bangs on the obverse and the rims on both sides.

Is it ex-jewelry ? Maybe. There sure are some rim dents in many places. How does the edge look ?

Personally, I would not submit it.

Thanks for your input. I'll accept the buyers offer of $350 :)

I didn't notice the obverse rim, either, but I speculate that it may have been in a screw-top bezel or other type of jewelry. If so, it will only garner a 'genuine' slab, which nonetheless is worth something when it comes to the gold dollars, heavily faked as they were. (I don't doubt that this one is authentic, of course!)

Well, the coin is no longer mine. I sold it on eBay for $350US. I made a nice profit on this beauty since I bought it for $200CAD ($190US) from my dealer. He had in stock for months and wanted to get rid of it so he dropped the price to $190 for me. I'm glad there isn't such a huge market for american coin in Canada since I can get crazy deals like these on occasion. $140CAD is what I'll make after eBay takes their undeserved large portion of $20+.

Not bad in my opinion :)

Congrats on the sale. This was also an interesting thread, as well.
