Has anyone ever heard of a gold coin error? Very rare!! I was looking over this one dollar gold coin and after I pulled out the loupe I realized I had discovered a crack! Looks to me like it could be on a faulty planchet but I don't know for certain. The crack goes from on top of the "I", through the "D" and "O", all the way to the second "L" and faintly to above the "9"!! Any ideas on how I could get a better pic? Any ideas on how much it could be worth? Any gold coin experts? Anyone?
How much do you think it's worth? Also can you lead me to a website that shows an example or talks about one? Thx Anyone else know where I can find a similiar error or variety online ?
My understanding is minor things such as die cracks on gold coins have no real effect on their value, unless they're already rare, since a large amount of the value of them comes from their bullion content.
Fret: It's common. No particular extra numismatic value that I'm aware of unless the crack happened to be a dramatic, eye appealing one. Key dates, low mintage and high MS grades do more to effect value. Here's one of mine with a couple die cracks on the reverse. Note the crack along top edge of United States from 'D STA' to the rim. There's another one between the "o" in dollar and the 8 in the date and a third one from the base of the 2 running to the top of the ribbon:
Ouch!! Oh man, you guys robbed my dreams out of thousands of dollars!! Alright then, I'll just mosey along and find something else to dream about.
