Yes, I found an error on the Washington dollar!! I picked up four rolls and on all of them, there was a tail extending off off of the 'D' mintmark. It was so drastic that it looks like a 'P'. :goofer:

I live in Kansas City, all of our new rolls of coins come from Denver. I've never gotten a roll of 'P's from the bank. I thought it was pretty wierd. Nice, that I don't have to find someone to trade with, but kind of odd.

I'm assuming that there must be a high demand for these, so their armored car company maybe had to get some from the other mint??

No, I found it in my pocket.

Actually I was delivering pizza's in high school (coming up on 20 years) and found it when I was cashing out one night. My friends and I used to play liers poker with serial numbers on bills so I kept it just for that. I didn't want to loose it or get it mixed up with other bills, so I folded it up into a little square and put it into a pocket in my wallet. I frequently took it out, unfolded it, played with it, and folded it back up. I wore it out pretty bad. If only I knew then...

It doesn't have any pin holes or tears, but its pretty soft. Now I've got it at the bank in the safety deposit box.

I've been told it might be worth $1000 - $3000 even in the shape it is. But I really don't know. It would have to be a pretty big chunk of money for me to sell it. If I could only keep one thing out of my collection that would be it, not just because its the most expensive, but its my favorite thing I've ever found in circulation.

Getting back to the original subject -

karrlot, were you joking about the shape of the mint mark, or is it really questionable whether it is a "P" or a malformed "D"?

If it really doesn't look like a genuine "P", please post a closeup.

I'm sure if you reread the OP you will agree he is talking Philly Coins.
Ever hear of a thing called humor?

    Is he?

He claims that his community normally receives Denver coins, and describes the mark in a way that could be true Ps, or could be misshapen Ds. I'm not sure whether he is joking or not, so I asked.

I read an article in numismatic news and it showed dollar coins with a raised area that apeared like a mirror image of the wrong mintmarks. Dropped letter mabey?? I believe it showed a d on a philly coin though.

No. I was joking. Sorry for the confusion. It was not really an error.

When I got the coins and started to look through them, it took me a minute to sink in that they were P's. I've never had a roll of P's given to me from the bank. I always get D's.

I thought I read somewhere that the Mississippi is the dividing line between the distribution of P's and D's and its always held true for me. In this case, though, I got P's.

I've added this error coin to my error album to be displayed with my other errors:

    - a 1991 quarter that had the portrait struck on the reverse, and the eagle struck on the obverse
    - a 1981 nickel that had both dies rotated 180 degrees
    - a 2004 dime that had the reeding put on backwards
    - a Lincoln 1909 S VDB that had the VDB left off.

    (those are just jokes too)

I've got a 1909 VDB missing the S. Darn it! A rather unvaluable error.

That funny, Those are about the only kind of errors I ever find! As for the mississippi river rule, Thats what iv'e heard also, but I don't think it's a hard and fast rule but a general gudeline.
