I was busy searching through a world lot of coins, when I noticed the difference between 2 different types of US 1 cent 1988 D. There is a substantial difference in the actual place of the mint mark D. On the first, the D is clearly positioned in between the 9 and the 8. In the second, the D is aligned with the first 8.

Any one of the US collectors than can give me some information on this piece? Is it common that their is a variety in the placement of the dates and mint marks? Is it also known for this year? Any information that you are able to present is an addition to my knowledge ;-)

Up untill about 1990 or so, the mint marks were stamped onto the dies by hand. Therefore each individual die will have a difference in the location of the mint mark.
