Howdy fellow coin peeps, I got my first true California Gold Fractional in today. hya: It's a 1869 BG-1106 octagonal $1 I am not sure what "period" it's from but I think it's a period 2 piece, which I think is a timeframe, since these rarely were minted the same year as they are dated but rather, are usually back-dated. Ribbit
This variety had issues. The LL of DOLLAR is extremely weak and there is a die crack on the obverse bust. Many CFG's have little quirks like this and are just like EAC's. :thumb: However, as you know, I collect EAC's but I buy the CFG's to resell them. I'm not into collecting gold, I'd rather stick with my copper. I'll post this for sale on the CalGold site shortly and use the proceeds to buy more copper. Ribbit
It looks like a hunk of the coin is missing in the obverse photo but there is no hole in the reverse photo. Strange.
AKA: Solder. These were usually made into jewelry and this one was a product of such an endeavor. :kewl: Ribbit
Solder would explain it. At first glance (and second glance) it looked liky your background (hence the reason I said it looked like a hole).
Toad so this is a real made in California piece , cool , there's so many collectable copies , do you know the purity of the gold . rzage
I see where you were going. You wanted to add this to your Holy Collection. Ribbit Ps: Are you still collecting holed coins? I asked you that in an email but you haven't replied?
I guess so. I still need a couple to complete my Dansco album and I will always upgrade one I already have.
Send me an email with the list of what you need. I could have filled up 3 complete Dansco's while you were away. Ribbit
Without checking my Dansco album I know I need the following holed coins: Reeded-edge Draped Bust Half Lincoln Memorial Cent Clad Roosevelt Dime Clad Washington Quarter Bicentennial Quarter
Toad I think we can help Hobo out on the last 4 , that is if he doen't care when they were holed:kewl::whistle:How bout it Bruce the drill is heating up right now . rzage
Now, now. I don't want to cheat. I could have easily drilled my own coins. But thanks anyway. I would consider a coin with a filled hole but I would replace it with a holed coin first chance I got.
Did I ever show you my purdy 1877-S SLH that has a filled hole and counterstamped KSK? I couldn't help from buying it since it was only $10. Ribbit
hey toad, do you know if this is one of the later, near worthless gold plated issues or if it is the original high purity gold pieces? Thanks.
