Has anyone else seen the greysheet price for 1/4 oz buffaloes? The unc is over $1100, the proof is over $1300, and dealers are paying up to $150 over sheet!! That means that this coin sells for almost as much as the Ultra High Relief $20! All I can say is WOW!
I think it's because they're roughly the same size as the original buffalo nickel. It's a nice size and if I could have a gold buffalo I'd want it to be the 1/4oz personally. So it's not surprising the price is so high I guess.
$300 each from June-Dec '08.....all you wanted for $300............:headbang: A $10 PCGS PR70DCAM FS sold for $1950 a few weeks ago.
chief, there was a price change during the year. Was it prior to June? Because I seem to remember it being somewhere around October. I bought mine just about 3 weeks before the increase.
There might be something to that. I was certainly impressed when I received my 1/4 Proof AGB and seem to remember thinking something like this too. I guess familiarity with the nickel and this design looked to me more impressive than on the larger 1 oz size. It's just amazing to me what the prices of the 2008 have done. I hope the UHR enjoys the same rise being a single year issue coin. Both are my favorite designs from the US Mint singe the beginning of the ASE program.
I sure wish at the time in 2008 that I had the dough for even just one 4-coin gold buffalo set. Instead I have just the one 1/4 2008 buffalo and one 1 oz. 2006 AGB. I passed for Eagles in 2007 and passed the buffalo in 2009 based on the price of gold + Mint premium and went with the UHR as it was more unique to me. Now I feel lucky for what I do have in terms of AGB.
I think that the smartest move was the 1/4 ounce coin. I specifically bought it and at the time I said that it would be popular due to it's closeness in size to the buffalo nickel. I only wish I could have bought the proof along with the the unc, but honestly, but if I had to choose one, the BU looks more like the nickel and that's what I bought.
Madness I tell you! History has taught me that when things are "crazy" it's often a great time to sell.
that's sound advice, Mike. Unfortunately, I generally buy coins because I want them in my collection, not to flip them. The huge price jump has been a nice "atta boy" for me, but it wouldn't matter if they sold for $10 tomorrow, I still like the coin, and want it in my collection. My heirs will have to worry about resale prices.
As much as the money to sell the 1/4 oz. AGB coin seems attractive and worth cashing in on the lunacy of those collectors in our fine hobby seems, I really like these coins and am not ready to part with mine. I bought mine as a collector when it was first offered from the Mint and not to simply flip so it would take something else like a need for money elsewhere in my life to get me to part with mine.
I've been thinkin' 'bout sellin' both my sets and buying that nice Chain cent I've dreamed about for soooooooooooooooooooooooo many years. Good trade ?? YES....:hammer:
Those are some crazy, crazy prices for a 1/4 oz of gold, even if it is nearly the same size as the buff nickel.
If you bought these directly from the US Mint, it is probably a good time to sell right now. Not too many modern coins appreciate like this so quickly. Who knows what they will be worth in the future? TC
do not sell. there will be no fractional buffalo available from the u.s. mint. untill then. the buffalo will keep going up up and up.
Recently, I received this email offer from MCM and posted it in some other AGB threads... So today I received an email from MCM as follows: Check out their going retail prices... the graded 2008-W 4 Coin Gold Buffalo Set NGC Proof 70 Ultra Cameo is retailing for $8485! The 2008-W $50 Gold Buffalo NGC Mint State 70 is retailing for $3985! That's some nutty, nutty stuff folks! :rolling:
Ya know TC. I was thinking along the same lines.....however I believe Elaine to be right. There are only so many and everyone is going to want them for their collections. I could see a profit of over 8K on my set of 4 unc and the 2008 MS-70 .But then I won't have them ! I promised my wife an 1/4 oz necklace out of a AGB that ain't happening now! Plus there's not going to be a horld of these cut loose later driving the prices down. I can see the price of this 4 raw coin set hitting 15K in the next 18 months !
Ahhhhh no no no, no way a chain cent will go up as much as the buffalos will! these are going to be big money coins in a while. ... they already are, but more so I think.
