I found this coin on an auction. From the coin's luster, it seems to me it is a proof or a restrike. Anyone have proofs or restrikes and can identify this? http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages...ages=524719628,524719654&formats=0,0&format=0
it is 1/12 Anna not 1/4. a guy in our flea market has a bucket full of rusty coins, I think he sells them for 3$ each I found the ebay auction, I think $29.49 is too much.
The NGC label on this coins says "UNC Details". That means it's not a proof. As for a restrike, the label would say that if it was.
The original proofs have wire rims and the P/L restrikes have evidence of die polishing struck onto the fields. These old proofs don't look like modern proofs do. Something to pay attention to when hunting for them.
@TexasJarHead : NGC graded this "UNC Details" because it had surface hairlines but wasn't sure if they also noted polishing and if surface hairlines took more precedence than altered color(Polishing). The coin seemed lacquered and NGC is known for getting confused with restrikes and proofs and business strike all the time. That's why I wanted to check if any were able to recognize this as a restrike. @Numistat, Thanks for the information. I did not know that. @Alfoulad, My bad, It is a 1/12 anna. I can't seem to edit the topic name.
I guess I just learned something new. I figured they would have labeled it "Proof Details". Didn't occur to me that they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a business strike and a proof.
They usually don't make that mistake. The things that distinguish business strikes, proofs and restrikes are fairly consistent on British India coins. A proof with issues would be slabbed as an impaired proof.
