I was looking at that one yesterday and by what I can tell, it's authentic, but I'm no expert on these. Ribbit
Same here, it looks authentic, but I'm WAY behind the curve in this forum when it comes to that kind of stuff.
FAKE Mint mark appears to be in the wrong location For this type - the 'S' should be above the tails of the 9's - This example it appears even with them. THUS FAKE
I don't think so. As I understand there are four known positions for the mint mark. Attached is the known positions. This coin would appear to 'try' to be the first example. But from my prospective, mint mark appears a little low.
Farmer....Is it your thinking then that only 4 dies were used to produce the 484,000 coins . These numbers would seem logical
I think the coin is real (obverse #3)... the B in VDB appears to have the slant to it... I'd say a real piece.. just really trashed.
Not sure on what you are implying here. Do you mean 'illogical'?? The way I understand the minting process. Master hubs are created at Philadelphia. These are special copies for the original artwork. Th ere is no mint mark on these hubs. From the copied hubs children have the mint mark applied and sent to remote mints. These children hubs are used to create the dies from which the coins are produced. So what I am saying is the four children hubs were created from which dies produced to create the coins. In the case of the Lincolns, production was to continue, but they got upset that original artwork had the initials V.D.B. so production was stopped. If I misunderstood your reponse, I am truly sorry
As I look at it further, the date and the VDB just seem a bit bold for the condition of the rest of the coin....
Here is a portion of the sellers pic, with dashed guide lines overlaid on it. Compared to the reference pics above the mint mark alignment looks off to me. Comments?
How about I add the pic this time Here is a portion of the sellers pic, with dashed guide lines overlaid on it. Compared to the reference pics above the mint mark alignment looks off to me. Comments?
Here's a pic of the date & MM on the Ebay auction, tagged with the article from Farmer. :thumb: I think it's a #1 obverse. :goofer: Ribbit
