08 S.Dakota state 25c clash? struck thru? above pheasant's shoulder

    At first I thought it was the standard die chip near the shoulder until I took a closer look. The mark is incuse and does not travel into the bird's neck. My whole coin photos are about useless but the obverse is only showing PMD and there aren't any traces of a typical clash anywhere else,nor does it align with the typical overlay.

    I don't see any marks on the obverse that would be expected with a die clash. Based on that, I don't think it's a die clash.

    Hard to tell in hand, but in these pics I might be seeing a continuation of sorts into the bird's neck, either creating pushed metal or it could be small chip/crack caused from the possible error on the die. Kind of a chicken/egg/jackass scenario.
