hey there. i have found another interesting quarter in my daily duties of rolling coin at the bank. first of all, i found two nice silvers (a 1961D strong strike obverse and a 1964D) then i found the following quarter. it's a 2007D idaho state quarter, with what appears to be a partial clad error on the obverse.

i found something similar over the weekend that was determined to be an acid bath, but this one is different. i can actually feel the edge of the nickel clad with my fingernail on the obverse, and i can also see and feel the seam between the copper core and the nickel clad around a portion of the reeding. also, you can't really tell very well from the pictures, but there appears to be either a crack or a seam in the nickel plating at the bottom of the coin, running horizontally under the words "QUARTER DOLLAR" from the "e" over to the "d", at which point copper core is completely revealed to the right.

i'm assuming this is not the result of an acid bath, but i could be wrong. i guess the question i'm asking is if such a thing can come from other pmd, and how one would be able to find out for sure. is it possible it's a mint error?

It appears you have a quarter with a partially missing clad layer. It might be worth getting this checked at the nearest coin shop, and then possibly get it slabbed. Genuine clad errors tend to get a little pricey, so you might have a coin that's worth a few bucks.

is this sort of thing, something that occurred at the mint? or can a coin become damaged like this out in circulation?
