I'm not trying to start any arguments with this poll; just trying to get an idea of what we think. This is for modern coinage.
It does'nt really matter what you call it. It's been called a penny/cent for 200 years and your opinion is'nt gonna change anything....
I voted cent since the Mint Act specified a cent and half cent, and the proper abbreviation for a penny is "d", for denarius. Since the real penny started as a silver coin this makes sense, and our cent never was silver. The word Cent even makes sense, since it is 1 perCENT of a dollar. I understand how people misuse words, but to me misuse does not change the fact that it is a cent. "Ain't" isn't a word just because many people use it, its still improper English even after all of these years. Just look at the coin and it tells you that its a cent, (though 99% of Americans never do). Chris
Well obviously the "Proper" name is Cent, since that's what it says on the coin. But, I'm no cent-snob. Call it a penny if you want, we all know what it means. Bank boxes, cent wrappers, etc. all say 'penny,' not cent.
Why do people only argue about the penny/cent, you never see bickering over the terms "buck", "nickle" or "Quarter"...etc.
It's no wonder this country is going to ****. First, kids got their mommy to do everything for them. Then, the computer did everything for them in school. Now that they're adults, they want strangers to do everything for them. There is an amazing tool called Google. Trying searching United States cent, and while you're at it, search for British penny. So, if you're not trying to start anything, why don't you ask one of the mods to close this thread and spend some time reading elsewhere? Chris
Quarter comes right from the coin, so no arguing there to me. Nickel is to tell the TYPE of five cent piece, since when they came out there were also half dimes. Buck I am not sure of, but at least it was not another historical denomination of another country being confused for a US coin. I am not a cent snob, just pointing out which is right, and why. If coin collectors do not pass this information along, who will? I might call a one cent piece a penny in everyday use, but try to always call a large cent, and IHC, or a lincoln cent a cent.
I use the term penny in everyday use as well, but when around fellow collectors I use the term cent. I also call any thing before the memorial cent, a "....." cent.
yup..thats a 3...really yes it may be a cent but who cares, everybody on the street calls in a penny...the English language (or American) is a two edged sword
It is a cent, but call it whatever you want. That is just my two cents..........(waiting for laughter)
By just picking more than one answer. I voted for the last two. For me the correct term is determined off the audience you are addressing and what you are trying to accomplish or get across to the listener.
