  • In 1849 James Longacre designed the Liberty Head gold coin.At a $20 denomination this series of coinage was deemed the highest denomination of coinage in the United States. The Mint began producing these coins in 1850 as the Gold rush in California was hitting it's peak. The Liberty Head series ended in 1907 as it was replaced later than year with Augustus St. Guadens' twenty dollar gold coin, the St. Guadens Double Eagle which is critically acclaimed to be the most beautiful coin ever made by the United States. This particular 1927 St. Guadens double eagle is graded by PCGS at a stunning ms66. There are only 14 finer examples known to exist making this spectacular coin a near one of a kind.
