My coin had a shine to it that made me think it was not in the ground. I have not metal detected for several years now, need to get back into it....
Thanks. The shiny copper color threw me off. Didn't know burning a dime turns it this color.

The quarter would get an MS Details grade. The curl next to the ear looks uncirculated and it has the lustre, but the scratch on the obverse at...
Not a Type C. Type C is the coin on the right in the picture, compared to one like yours on the left. Look at the tail feathers.
Another great example of Washington quarter toning, probably my favorite toned coin picture:

I was able to capture a picture of mechanical doubling on a quarter, it is very difficult for me to tell sometimes too. Notice the A and the M in...
There is an older thread on this forum where a member wrote out a nicely detailed explanation on how to grade luster, but the pictures in that...
I've looked at many other 1964 quarters graded MS67 on Heritage and sometimes it seems the grader lets a rather abundant amount of contact marks...
No Type-C on this one, just trying to gauge what a high MS would look like in person. I'm assuming it's too difficult to assess a proper grading...
I built an axial lighting display to take better pictures of my coins. I've been finding some interesting ones that I've set aside (a real DDR,...
Nice. With the limited Google research I've done, I was given the impression that PCGS is the only way to go when it comes to accurate grading....
Will check Great Coll./Heritage, thanks. And some of the PCGS graded coins on ebay will be sold for $30-40... it's costs that much just to get...
What is the preferred way to determine valuation of a coin? Is it Ebay, where you can see actual bid activity, or the PCGS/NGC website that shows...
Thank you. I do notice the more smeared-like machine doubling now. I have an idea what to look for in DDO/DDRs now. That varietyvista website is...
Wow, then I definitely lucked out finding the Type-C if it took that long for you guys to try finding them. It stands out with the naked eye too,...
I struck out on finding any more Type-C quarters. I did find at least one that has both DDO and DDR. This seems common for 1964 though.
Okay. Now I should have an idea what to look for. Have about $100 face-value in 1964s to go through.
The tail feathers are much sharper than the comparable quarter in the picture. What do you guys think? Type-C? I think I saw a few of my 1964s...
