That would explain the mark around the date could that cause the mint mark to vanish or become faint?
Once you see it you can't turn away from it please consider looking one more time because its pretty clear once located

I'll play along here for a second and say there is no S under the 5. What kind of error do you call that that is around the date ?
My thought was it was a 1953 s with the cud error like yours above then it got filed off and Re dated ??? But that sounds crazy to go though all...
