I've been collecting coins for 55yrs and certainly would not recommend doing something that doesn't work or damages coins.

BTW. After taking the coin out of the ginger ale rinse it well then pat dry. I have coins that I did this to years ago and they still look great...
Coins that have been in the ground for a long time have dirt buried in the details that rinsing won't get entirely out so even a soft toothbrush...
