Yes, the link Islander posted describes what a "capped die" is, and how it's made. It describes what the "cap" is. So what is it?
I considered that it might be a plating effect, from a mid-80's zincoln. I've seen that sort of parallel pattern on those sorts of coins. I can't...
Then you tell us what the caps are made of. Not trying to be difficult. Pushing you to learn :)
I think it's personal preference. As with most things collecting, it comes down to what you like. The analogy on coins would be, do you want...
Did you read the article posted?
I don't think it's a capped die. Those usually have a more regular appearance. Given the texture of the coin, I strongly suspect this is struck...

Possibly? But I don't plan on cracking it.
I'm going through my collection and taking new images of coins, trying to upgrade old pictures. I've owned this coin for several years now (graded...
It's tricky, and there is no hard and fast rule. Widely accepted, I think, R4 is where there starts to be a premium, but it's generally going to...
No. It costs a lot extra to get them to put it on the label, and they don't have the most accurate track record. The vast majority of Bust Halves...
