Your coin is a normal nickel. It looks like someone grinded the edge down to give it that tough feeling.
If it is glue you could soak it in acetone and it will come right off.
It looks like those areas took at hit. Although it is a nice coin copper is very soft and can be damaged easily.

No it is not worth getting graded. The expense of getting the coin grades would outweigh the value of the coin.
