Just realized that I don't know how to PM anyone. Can someone explain?
It's RIC, vol.VIII, Lyons, #9, minted A.D. 337-340. It's listed as scarce, but it's not unique.
Here's another good resource: www.vcoins.com. It's a sort of marketplace for dealers. You can use their search engine to compare prices, see what...
Back when I first started buying uncleaned ancient coins, I was inundated--great word, inundated; I use it whenever I can--with 4 common reverse...
We are a pretty nefarious lot, aren't we?
Yup. Same here. Never looked back. Great OP coin. Nice design, good condition, and just loaded with interesting history.
It's a Soli Invicto from Ticinum with Sol facing forward rather than left. $20 is indeed a great price. I paid around $100 for mine about 8 years...
The seam looks okay, and the stress marks are encouraging. The overall look, however, reminds me of pewter, but that could be just weird toning....
The style of the Alexander tet is good, but, while a coin can be condemned as fake from a photo, it's never enough to assure its authenticity....
Technically, aren't about half the rulers of the 3rd century A.D. usurpers?
Sigh.
It's not a toss up. Constantius Gallus was executed in 354 A.D. If there is a diadem, which I think there is, then it is Constantius II...
Paduans have been discussed in this forum before: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/my-paduans-or-aftercasts-of-them.258953/
I think I see the vestiges of a diadem, making it Constantius II. The mint looks like ANAI, for Antioch, with a mint date between A.D. 355-361.
The O is a lifetime issue, according to Price - ca. 325-323 B.C. jb_depew, your coin is still considered an Alexander the Great drachm even...
Perhaps "replica" is a more charitable word. It might have come from a museum gift shop. It doesn't look like it was intended to deceive anyone.
Agreed. Actually, that's the first double portrait coin from Odessos that I've seen. (And now I've seen two with the above example from Parthicus....
Looks great. Did you say "partly" cleaning? I'm not sure how much more you'd want to mess with it. I think it's about as clean as it's going to get.
I agree that it is probably an engraver error. You might enter it as N[sic]N Gamma, cf. RIC 123 or something similar.
Congratulations on a great find. That's a real beauty! I imagine that you must have been very excited when you started cleaning it.
