I disagree. They are not the same. I agree with your description of die polish and how it appears on the coin. But a die scratch that goes across...
To me it looks like a bad dip job.
Yep, vinegar is is acidic (acetic acid) but it is VERY dilute. Won't work, at least in my lifetime.
The feature on the obverse is SO linear that I suspect it's not a die crack. I think it's a die scratch. Different cause; same result.
Might not even grade depending upon what the scratching is all about.
Coins with highly reflective surfaces are a pain to image. One way is to use axial lighting BUT that would require more equipment (I built mine)....
I'll be there for both sessions. I'll be wearing something. Age: 70
I use a "pay" image hosting service (iPage). That avoids all the excess baggage associated with the freebies. Plus I get my own domain name.
From what I can see I'll go along with a die crack. At first I had a problem with that since the lower horizontal leg doesn't seem affected. BUT...
It's LONG gone. But it was a wheatie and since I started in about 1955 it had to be that date or earlier.
The FOX book about WL Halves states that 1943-S halves are generally poorly struck. That's what I'm seeing. Without the coin in hand I can't tell...
I'd say distilled water first, acetone second. Olive oil is slightly acidic. Using it means you are no longer removing crud; you have stepping...
LESSON LEARNED (or in this case REMINDED OF): Thanks to NGC's labeling method and my inattention to details I goofed. I was after a 1927-S...
I generally agree. The reverse is better than the obverse; nice horn and split tail. If the obverse details can be attributed to a worn die you...
I SAW IT!!! Having met Charmy I recognized her immediately. I liked her comment about Cory 'not knowing who he was dealing with.'
A very impressive piece of work. And the coins ain't too shabby either :thumb:
MPL? I guess if I don't know my opinion is of no value. And I'll never be able to learn.
I know this is nit picking (yeh, I can be a PITA) but based on the title of this thread shouldn't a nickel 3-cent be included. And also -- oh,...
If I recall correctly the diamonds on the ribbon on the obverse are normally weak to very weak.
I'll be there both weeks. Taking Grading I and Grading II. The bummer is that I will miss the Balto Whitman show.
