You are correct. I didn't word it quite right. (Typing and watching tv at the same time:D) Lathe lines would appear only on the earliest strikes.

Common 1953 $5 notes, in circulated condition, run about $7 and up.
So far they are just an interesting find for collectors. They can commonly be found on earliest die strikes. The mint says they are lathe lines...
