to me it looks like salt damage - salt is murder on zinc pennies - being in Syracuse where it snows lot - i see some cents like this with a ring...

the dates i would sift thru from ordinary looking coins and not just worth a few dollars but are worth to sell up to maybe thousands of dollars...
looks like enviromental damage - most nickel-clad coins that spend some time outside in ground turn black, but it might depend on the soil type....
