I am an expat and work over the world. I collect the coins from the country I work. I moving to Canada next year and are going to try to collect 90% of Chile coins for last 200 years before then. That is my goal.

I have collected all the coins, meaning all dates and patterns from 1960 (no gold) or even earlier to date, with a few proofs. On the local market with some searching for the last odd three months I would say (excluding proofs) CLP 150 000 or 320 US dollars. I think I did overpay sometimes for key dates like 1961 centesimos, 1958 pesos, 1985 10 and 50 pesos, which are scares. Modern Chile is a very nice set to collect since there were may coin reforms and has some serious history to it. Also, many key dates with very low mintage. Chile is in the process of becoming the economic centre of Latin America and would soon file for 1st world country. I think that the coins would get more attention in the future. I am currently working on my mid-late 19th and early 20th century centavos set (to 1927), which is great with low mintage in silver and still cheap.

Selectively. Most of my coins were found in foreign bins from local dealers, even some of the larger silver coins. I purchase the best examples or coins I don't think I have. If the coins are better than what I have, I upgrade my collection with the better ones and sell the lesser conditioned ones on eBay. I usually purchase between $20 and $40 dollars worth. My return on the sales is between $40 to $100. So my collection pays for it's self plus a little extra to make future purchases of more exotic or rare items. I have 100 binders (1 inch) with about 10 pages of 2x2 holders, each page holds 25 coins and most of the pages are nearly full. That's about 24,000 to 25,000 +/- coins in my collection.
