It looks more like the 1921. I was just comparing my 1878 and 1921 and although they are both parallel the 21 is a bit different. I may be wrong though the 78 I have is ms and the 21 I am looking at is au
Thanks. I wasn't thinking. I know 1895 is a Proof-only issue for Morgan Dollars. My knee-jerk reaction was to reach for my Red Book which lists a mintage of 12,000 1895 Morgan Dollar Business Strikes.
What about "luster" or the "cartwheel" effect on Gem looking Morgans? From what I know, that is one of the main things counterfeiters have not been able to accomplish. One thing I definitely see on the OP's coin is that it has lots and lots of little pinholes which is a good indication that the coin is not silver or is of poor quality. Yes, sometimes you see VAMs which have some mini gas bubbles which is to look for on certain varieties but not as many as this coin in question.
Correct. In one of Bowers and Merena's Rare Coin reviews that had an article on the 1895 business strike dollars and included in the article was a picture of the coiners account book page that listed the 12,000 business strikes. In the book next to the figure was an * and at the bottom of the page was the explanation "* coined with 1894 dies."
