Is there anything better than nice big silver coins? I don't think so! Netherlands 1931 2-1/2 Gulden. 72% silver 25g. .5787 oz ASW.
Is this the Wilhelmina for which we originally began celebrating "Queens Day" in The Netherlands? I think they have changed the day of celebration to coincide with each new queen's birthday.
The bigger the better, I say! Here's a 1954b Swiss 5 Franc with William Tell on the obverse. .835 silver, .4027 ASW.
Not Tell but an Alps shepherd. Still a nice piece. As for the Dutch "Koninginnedag", that was indeed introduced for Wilhelmina. Originally it was on her birthday (31 August), now it is on the day when Queen Juliana was born (30 April). When Juliana's daughter Beatrix became queen, she decided that the date should be kept. Thanks, I was going by the info in my Krause. They have it as being William Tell but after doing a little googleing I find that it became associated with Tell because of it's similarities with a statue of Tell by Richard Kissling. Now I learned my new thing for today and my brain can take the rest of the day off and just enjoy football.
