I'm watching this guy hock coins on HSN for some laughter, of course, and earlier he made the comment that he is hearing the ASE Proof Program is over and will not be started again. He was selling the "prooflike" 2009 ASE by Daniel Carr for $99.95. I just laugh at this guy sometimes... just like there were suppose to be no satin finish coins in the uncirculated set this year. Right.... discuss.

As a rule of thumb if you buy coins advertised on television you will most likely end up overpaying for them.

Yep I won't pay for coins off of TV they are just overpriced almost always. There are exceptions maybe that'll you'll see about once a year or so. I just think that guy (Meezak) makes some unreal statements.

Air time is very expensive these days. They have to pay for it some how.

If you listen to "Mr. Mike" for any reason other than a good laugh, then you need to sell your TV set!

I was going to go on a rant about the TV hucksters but it started my blood pressure to rise so I calmed down to say:

Just don't buy your coin from the liars on TV. You can always do better elsewhere.

A couple of things about this, I saw it on TV before I saw this post. First, how was this done since proof planchets are pre-glossy before striking. Mezak said the sculpture had bought an old press from the Denver Mint. He went on to say they are a MS coin that were struck numerous times under heavy pressure. It seems it would still be hard to obtain the smoothness and shine.

I can see where many ASE proof collectors would purchase this coin. It will fill a hole in their album, be a conversation piece, and many I'm sure think someday it will be worth thousands. I don't collect these, but like I said I can understand those that do purchase them. I have to admit if I did collect them I would consider it.

I do collect them but its basically a novelty piece that, IMO, won't ever be worth more than the silver value really. I did notice when they showed the "prooflike" coin a lot of the lines in lady liberty's dress were not there. And around the edge of lady liberty had a very bold appearance to her. I would actually think that the guy who made these could possibly get into some issues with the government which is why they kept emphasizing its a gov't issued eagle overstruck by a private minter. His initials are on the reverse where the "W" mint mark would normally be. I guess this guy designed some of the state quarter reverses. I just thought it to be a big joke. I know on the coinvault network they were selling those prooflike ones too for the same price $99.95 so I don't know how HSN is claiming they are the only ones that have them and came up with the idea since I have seen them on another network.

HSN was also selling a 1986 silver proof eagle in OGP for $125 and I got the same one on ebay a while back for $48 so that gives you an idea of how much over market they are on HSN. And the coin I got was absolutely stunning.

Take a MS 2009 ASE, line it up in this press with polished dies, press it a couple of times, ~walaa~ PROOF 2009 ASE

Send them to hungry ANACS for encapsulation, hawk them on national TV as a rarity.
