What are your thoughts on the Barber Half Series?? Are they worth completing??? Would they appreciate in value in the future?? There's not alot of articles about ppl's experiences collecting this series.... I tried collecting the Barber Quarters but too many expensive dates...(1901-S) because my LCS (local coin store) sells numerous VG Barbers halves for $6-$8 i'd figure that's a good start.... -acsf89
acs: Well, You may not know me... but I am a Barber nut. As for the $1/2 go for it! There are a number of sleeper dates, and overall, the series is too cheap. They are certainly due for a nice increase. The 1910 P [418,000 minted] is a favorite of mine, along with the 1905 P [662,000 minted]. then there are the 1911 D, 1913 D & S, all under 1 million minted and listed (priced) as ordinary dates.
They are a better set to work on, although the 92S 92O 93S 97o 97s 13 14 and 15 are the ones you should start with as they are they key dates and finding them will be a bit of a challenge.
Sounds like a fun set! Are you going to stick to a G/VG set? I've never tried collecting Barber halves as a set, but having purchased a few through upgrades for a type set, anything Fine and up is terribly difficult to find. Good luck!
thank you for all your suggestions....yes ill start with a VG/F set... as for the key dates...ill just purchase slabbed VG's... I have been told to start with key dates... and hopefully ill finish my collecting by this year or early next year ...hoping (crosses fingers)
They are a great series, easiest to complete of the Barbers, especially in VG. Good luck and have fun!
I couldn't agree more. It seems the Barber half gets forgotten about a lot. It's a fun series to collect. I also like Barber dimes and think they're a real bargain as well. Guy
I wish you luck, however, don't get discouraged. In all VG/F's you may take a bit longer than the rest of this year or early next year. You want the keys slabbed? Then it will definitely take longer. But, good luck, a tough and fun set -- and, hey who knows you may even find a new variety. I 'discovered' the 1909 S inverted MM, now in Cherrypicker's Guide.
In my opinion, the barber series is a great design and its interesting rather than collecting pennies (*im not trying to disrespecting any wheat cent collectors*) because you dont find a whole lot of barber series collectors out there.... As for the VG/Fine...it might probably take a while but im sure hoping its worth it in the future... I already have 11 coins and one slabbed PCGS 1913 Barber Half VG-10 so lets see if I can find any moe slabbed key dates... btw thanks very much for the advice=)
