I know this isn't a bill but it is paper and money related. I guess my question is- Is it ok to post items like this here or do I need to put them somewhere else? (not sure where it would go) Oroville is a local town (20 minutes away) and I collect SF federal reserve notes so I though this was a perfect connection.
Right place to post. Some cheques and stocks have stunning engravings on them, especially the earlier ones. Nice spin-off for your collection!
VERY nice turn-of-the-century check. It has almost perfect centering, two interesting vignettes, and a detailed border. Thanks for sharing, and I agree with ikandiggit about THIS being the right place to post.
Nice piece! :thumb: It's quite fine by me to see checks in the PM forums. They are conceptually paper money, no? Additionally, we have threads in the PM forum on: Souvenir cards, bank note printers like ABNCo devoted threads: American Banknote Company, ABNCo Archive Series, ABNC Transfer Die, etc. Specialized threads like: BABN railroad vignettes or Canadian Bank Note items and sharing paper ephemera like tickets... plus an older thread on 19th century intaglio checks
If you guys are willing to post I would love to see others. It seems like checks and stocks are a cheaper way to pick up some of the great historic artwork.
camlov2, you might have a lot of fun chasing down the history on this check, if you haven't already. My brief understanding is that Kimball-Upson was the precursor to KFBK radio, which was then bought by McClatchy, which owns the Sacramento Bee. I may have that all backwards, but I think the names Kimball and Upson are important names in Northern California. Dave
Wow, I guess I will need to look into that. Here is the history of the bill as I know it- This guy had it for sale, I bought it...................I feel ashamed. I will look into and let you know what I find, that would be a great connection to document.
When I was about 12, my neighbor cleaned out the Battle's Bank here in Girard. He brought home about 5000 checks from about 1870 to mid 1900s. We played with them for a while then burned them. Look up battles bank checks. If I only knew......
No, He worked for the Boro and they told him to 'Clean it out, get rid of everything'. He also took home the oak Banker's chair and table, now donated to the local Historical society. We destroyed maybe 15 to $20,000 worth of exonumia.
From what I have found you are right on with your info. The radio station didn't get started until the 20's but Kimball & Upson was running a sporting goods store in the Sacramento area before that time.
have quite a few bank relateds, myself, old drafts, IOUs, promissory notes. I also have other materials, such as post cards of banks. If you understand what a Currency Union is, or how the Hong Kong Dollar works, or how the private banks in Scotland and Belfast issue their own currency backed in UKP, then you see that drafts (checks) are just another kind of paper money, as valid as any other.
