I understand that Series 611 was issued for use in Japan, Korea, Cyprus, and of all places, Libya. Was it issued specifically for Wheelus AFB in Libya?

 

The Series 611 was Issued on 1/6/64 and withdrawn on 4/28/69 and used in the countries above
That you mentioned Japan, Korea,Cyprus and Libya since it was issued for the entire period
It woudnt have been for just one particular base.

Also this particular note has by far the lowest printing of the series only 2,800,000 and one
Of the lowest in the entire Mpc series 461-692 (issued series)

 

Yes. Series 611 MPC was used at Wheelus AFB in Libya. I believe Wheelus was the only US military facility in Libya while MPC was being used in that country.

 

I've noticed that most, if not all of the certificates seen on various threads have interesting colors, elaborate vignettes, and attractive women in portraits on the front. Are the women portrayed famous, or have any significance other then being attractive ? Are there STAR notes issued for Military Payment Certificates ?

Also as far as replacement notes go yes here,s how you can tell:

Std serial number: H01290301H (the note above)

Replacement: H01290301 (No letter at the end would mean this is a replacement)

I would be rich if this was the case with this note......LOL

None of the women on MPC were modeled after real people. The only real people to appear on issued MPC were Chief Hollow Horn Bear on the 692 $10.00 and Chief Ouray on the 692 $20.00. The astronaut on the back of the 681 fractionals is from a picture of Ed White on a spacewalk. The naval personnel on the conning tower on the USS Thomas A. Edison, the submarine on the face of the 681 fractionals have also been identified. The image was from a photo of the submarine in Scotland.

Series 701 notes have famous people depicted on them. The fractional notes depicted Mark Twain (these were destroyed with no examples known outside official circles). The $1.00 note features Washington Irving, the $5.00 has Edison, the $10.00 Washington and the $20.00 Robert Fulton. It has been a joy to again see your Series 681 $20 note, showing that magnificent Boeing, B-52, Stratofortress. The only time we knew they were overhead was when we looked skyward and saw the white contrail clouds caused by their eight jet engines. They flew too high to be seen of heard. Knowing that they were subject to both surface to air and air to air attacks, a quick search of website nampow.org shows that we lost 26 B-52s over South-East Asia. Ten were shot down over N. Vietnam and 16 are listed as operational losses [other locations].
