This 1861-O Seated Liberty half is for sale at a local antique mall for $45. I think its a deal but idk much about this design. I know the pics aren't great but they let me take a few. Give me your opinion about whether to buy or not and a shot-in-the-pitchblack-dark if you feel like it. Thanks very much, Tyler
I wouldn't go as far as to say it's even real. The text in "LIBERTY" and the stars on the obverse look way too weird. Then again, I'm probably wrong. Wait for some more opinions
i would grade it VF 30 with the reverse being a little cleaned. if youve got to have one the price is alright from here.
I like the coin and believe it is original (or hasn't been cleaned for a very long time). I have no idea if this coin is worth $45 and I would like to see better pictures of the coin.
$45 sounds like a fair price...judging from the pics I don't see any problems. I like the crust factor. use this link for more info on die pairs...If there is a die crack from Liberty's nose to S7 you have the popular CSA striking. http://www.stellacoinnews.com/index.php/seated-half-dollars-1861-o/
Honestly, from the pics, I would not buy it. I might change my mind seeing it in hand. But something looks "off" to me. But I don't know this coin. I just would take a pass, myself. gary
I think what I'll do is arrange some way to bring it back if it turns out fake. The people that run the place are really nice and I bought some stuff from them a week or so ago (a couple barbers and a cheap 43-P jefferson). I'll post pics out of the 2x2 as soon as I get it (probably be a couple weeks as I'm broke atm). And thanks for the links Capped. Very helpful. I knew that variety existed but I knew next to nothing about it.
Thanks. I like it too. Mostly because its an O and it was minted immediately before the civil war and during the term of my favorite president, Mr. Lincoln (well it could have been before but only by a couple months lol).
I like it. And the variety with the crack from the rim to Liberty's now is not the only one that was struck by the Confederacy, just the best known because that obv die was also used to strike the four CSA half dollars. The other CSA dies can bring a premium as well.
Do you have a link to a site with all the varieties? I love this time-period and would love to learn everything I can about the switch-over from the Union to the Confederacy. It'd be cool to have one minted by the confederacy.
As far as I know th information is not available on-line. It appeared in the 94th and 97th editios of The Gobrecht journal. At one time I had a couple photocopies of it but right now I can't even find my copy. Best I can do is look for it and let you know when I find it.
Thanks! I'm going to pick it up right now. I'll post much better pictures probably on a different thread later today.
