1887-S Five Dollar Gold Piece..What's the grade?

    Pulled out another coin from my old collection...an 1887-S five dollar gold piece....Hope my photograph's came out OK....Any idea's about the grade? Thanks

    Aloha, first off, welcome to the forum. Your Half Eagle looks a bit like mine but accept for (maybe) a little worse. I am no expert but I'll try my best. I wanna say mine is MS-60-61 or 62. Yours is probably an AU-55-58 or even a 60.

    While the coin still has good luster in protected areas most of the luster is missing. (That's one reason why I cannot say Uncirculated.) It's hard to tell from the photos but I think I see wear on Liberty's hair, eyebrow and nose. So that to me makes the coin AU. But low AU or high AU? With all the "chicken scratches" in the fields and all over Liberty (prime focal area) I have to go with low AU and call it AU-50.

    thanks...i purchased as an AU coin all those years ago....i will have to look through my boxes to see if i have more denominations

    I had an 1886-S $5 once, and sold it for $275 (made $50. Got it when gold was low in '08.) Are you asking for advice so you can sell this? If so, I could help with prices besides that, or you could check a Red Book.
