And according to CoinWorld, Technicians at the Philadelphia Mint have been experimenting for more than a year trying to perfect edge lettering capabilities.

Great, but you think the Mintage will be like 100 trillion? What will thier investment potential be?

If no ones uses them like I would expect, the 2008s and up will have lower mintages I would think.

I have always been in the minority of coin collectors in that I look forward to the new series.

I hope it is a success, but certainly it is all about profit for the Government.

I look forward to the minting of the coins, and hope they will be popular with collectors and teach a little history along the way.

I hope it is a success aswell, I just don't think it will be one. Either way I will collect them and look foward to them.

Something new to collect. Time will tell about popularity and/or collector value.

What's the word on living former presidents? Yes or no?

Anyway, still think these will be interesting, if nothing else. I don't care much if others will want to collect them or if they'll ever go up in value, so long as they're something I want to collect, lol... Glad to see this passed.

Well, it's the best of both worlds... for those who like presidential portraits on coins, this will be a nice series.

And for those of you who enjoy LIBERTY on coins, this should also be a good series. After all, what depicts LIBERTY better than the Statue of Liberty herself?

But, it's going to take more than 10 years to complete this series (probably more like 12 years once it reaches the most current eligible president).

It might be better if they released one coin per month. Then we could get through the series in about 4 years...

As if the banks didn't hate us coin collectors enough already for buggin about state quarters....

Preferences aside, it will be interesting to see how well the coins are made, ie will they have any eye appeal.

For example, if the CT state quarter had come out later in the series, I probably would never have collected them. To me its one of the most beautiful modern circulation strikes around. But how many made for extended die life spaghetti heads can people take? Isn't Washington too much already?

Time will tell I suppose. Anyone have a link to any proposed designs?

I can see it now. A future Coin Talk thread...

A future thread which asks, "Which is your favorite/least favorite dollar coin?" I would bet it will be the first one (Washington) and after that, a few votes here and there.

Then there will be a thread, "Anybody collecting/buying the First Lady gold coins?" and I would bet that 95% of numismatics will care less about these coins. I would also bet that the mint scraps the first lady gold coins after the first couple of years.

Think about it...would you want to buy a solid gold coin of Rutherford B. Hayes wife on a freakin' GOLD coin!?!?!

I am sure she was stunning in her day. But think about it, do we really give a hoot about presidential spouses. After all, they were NOT elected into office. They just came along for the ride.

So what does the mint do? They want to put them on gold bullion. Unbelievable!!

After Bush signed the bill, did he try to spend it? Duh! Sorry, wrong section. :)

Only Dead Presidents and they must have been dead at least 2 years before their spot comes up.

I have only seen the CoinWorld artists conception that pictured in the article. Nothing from the mint yet.

I kind of like the design. At least they're not doing the typical silhouette-style bust they've traditionally done on coins. I just wish they weren't putting the date on the edge of the coin.

I'll collect them, not as an investment, but because I collect US coins.

I think it might be cool to have the date on the edge of the coin (sort of like early 1800's coins had wording incused on their edges).

It will be easy to track the coins because each coin will have a different portrait PLUS the dates of the tenure of the president will be printed on the obverse of each coin... It will be easy to keep them in order.

It might be a little strange having a "Washington Quarter" a "Washington dollar coin" and a "Washington dollar bill" all in my pocket at the same time.

Edge dates won't be a problem, you can tell the year by the President on the coin. Mint marks will be a different story. Coins in albums, folder, holders, even 2X2's will be difficult to determine the mint.
