Well, I just purchased this coin for about 750 dollars. I can return the coin if not satisfied, and the seller has pretty decent feedback. I looked long and hard at pcgs and ngc ms-62's, and this looks like it has a shot at ms-62, as it has an even nicer strike than most of the ms-62's I looked at. Do you guys think it will make a 62 or not? I think if it got a 61 I'd be happy.

Hey zaneman...it looks like you are spending some serious dollars on Morgans.

My advice, skip eBay and take a trip to the F.U.N. show in Orlando. Send the kids to Disney World and just down the road at the convention center, hit the floor and see the most and the best of the best coins in the world.

    FUN Coin Show Link

They also have some great seminars (I will attending the one on grading) for FREE and there you can see and hold many of these coins (it really is Morgan dollar city) in your hand!

Over 400 boothes, you really are in coin heaven!

So forget about feedback, doctored pictures and all. SEE and hold the coin in hand before you buy!

It looks 62 or 63 to me, but what do I know. Why is the price of these so much higher than other's with similar mintages?

    Hi Speedy,
I don't have the coin in hand, but I did ask the seller about that toning, and he said it is for sure toning.

Hmm, my grandparents live in Orlando, and I don't start up penn state again till January 9th........ : ) I need to look into flying down there.

If this coin gets an ms-62 grade, then I got a steal based on realized auction prices.

The only thing I wonder about is this...if the seller was a coin collector...and he knows how much one would be worth...why not get it slabbed and then sell it and make more $$....I can see him selling it raw if it wasn't so high grade....

I think it will achieve at least MS-62...

I think the cheek and the chin will keep it down along with the (I presume) counting machine mark in the field on the obverse in the 8:00 o'clock position. It looks like it might have a small rim ding in the same position, but it could just be the photograph.

It's difficult to tell from the pics provided, but perhaps MS-63?

    Cross your fingers... :)

I could easy be wrong on this since all I have to go by is a small pic - but if I were you I would return the coin just as fast as I could. I think it is an altered coin.

The O mint mark is oval in shape - that one appears to be almost perfectly round. Compare it to the coin found - HERE

I'm not sure why they would alter it. The 1894 philadelphia is worth more, as is the s mintmark coin. I'll post some better pictures as soon as I get it, and see what the consensus is.

I agree the P coin is worth more, but the S is half the value of the O in comparable grades. And I don't know why they'd do it either - but it looks to me like they did.

I definitely see what you mean. The O mint mark looks like the ones from the pre 1885 years.

You got to go! See the grandparents, crash at their place because when you walk into that huge exhibit hall, the first thing you will think is, "Holy ****, will you look at all these coins!?!"

The convention hall is right on International Drive just SW of Orlando and NE of Disney (one of the reasons they put it right in the middle of the two).

Forget all of those eBay pics and worrying about feedback and return policies. One of the best things at this show is that EVERY grading company will be there. Have a question about a grade? Take the coin right to their booth and ask them...for free! I always take raw coins to their booth to ask them for their grading opinion and many times over, they saved my butt because they spotted cleaned and dipped coins immediately!!

    Hope to see you there...

How about a closeup of that "O" mintmark, Zane? I think it's a real coin, but let's get a better look at it...

I will provide a closeup as soon as I have the coin in hand, which will be wednesday.

I've looked pretty long and hard at some other coins, and the mintmark seems to be in the right spot, and the right dimensions based on scale, so here's to hoping it's real. Can anyone tell me what the grey sheet bid is on an ms-62 1894-o?

    Speedy,
That concerned me as well, however I looked through his coins, and he has several hundred for sale, and not one is certified. I think he must simply not waste time with TPG's despite the fact he could make more money. He has some nice coins too, and over 2300 positive feedbacks, with a rating of 99.5% so he seems pretty good. I'm just glad he has a seven day return policy.

Dunno about Greysheet, but they are selling for about $1500 if graded.
