Aloha, I have a question regarding my dansco album. I read the thread about p v c eating away coins. I was wondering if there is anything wrong with storing coins from different materials in the same album. Like copper pennies with silver dimes, just different pages. I bought the binder and one page for each coin (silver dollar, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies). I all have them stored together in the same album with my cracked-out of slab-key dates. Is there any chance of corrosion in the future? I didn't buy a slipcase for it.
It's not so much the album , but rather the conditions in which you keep your albums. Area Temp , possible moisture or condensation etc . And than there is the possibility of scratching a coin's surface while either inserting them or removing them . The majority of collectors today do not assemble their collections in this manner , with encapsulation being the safest way to protect your coins. If you collect " Raw " coins , probably the safest way is to put them into a airtite holder . But there are those who still continue to use these albums , for Presentation purposes , as you do I assume. Temp. is your biggest worry I would say.
The OP apparently lives in Hawaii (where my brother has lived for the last 35 years). I suspect that the environment is wet with a constant temperature of perhaps 79 degrees F. There may also be some salt spray but I would hope that the coins are kept away from that. IMO the humidity might be more of a problem than temperature in this case. Using the slip cover & keeping the coins in a dry container would be my recommendation.
I store all my coins in a water/fire proof safe. So they should be safe from the humidity which is not that common in my area. I'll try and find a slip case for it, thanks Collect89.
