I have a coin that I believe is a bullion possibly from croesus era, I am not sure. It has a shield with what looks like lions and ships in the top left and bottom right and gates in the opposite. It also has funky writing all the way around. on the reverse is a bow and 6 arrows in a bunch under it. and more funky writing all the way around. I am not sure if pics will come out. if interested I can e-mail them to you.

Can you tell what the letters are around the coin?

Just use the Attachment function and post the pics here. If it is a coin and not a medal or something - I'll help you get it identified ;)

Hate to admit it - but this one has me stumped. The obverse ( shield side ) bears the arms of Castille & Leon - the throne of Spain. But the reverse - that one I have never seen. In fact I cannot even find in the books a duplicate of the royal arms as on this coin. I can find no coin the even comes close in any countries of the Spanish empire.

The coin does not have the look of a counterfeit or a fantasy piece - but unless somebody else can come up with something - I'm afraid that's what it might be.

Hey, thanks for checking, but I found my answer. It is an 8 reales from 1469-1516 AD. It is Arm\Arrows tied on the reverse. It is the 8 reales in the name of Ferdinand and Elizabeth. It was one of the coins that celebrated thier marraige, or something like that. They used these coins to help fund Christopher Colombus, in 1492, to go to the "New World". And yes you were right about the arms, it is the Crown of Castile. Thanks for helping.

You could easily be quite correct. But I did some checking on the reales of Ferdinand & Isabella myself when you first asked. I have looked at 8 reales, 1 reale and 2 reales examples. And I have yet to be able to find a design that matches your coin in all details.

This does not mean your coin is not genuine however as there were a great many varieties of these. Well over 100 in fact.

Ferdinand and Elizabeth? You mean Isabella surely?
