Can this damage be stopped? Can the pitting be stopped? Was happy when I came across this in my coins but years of wear evident! 1828 1/2 cent
I see the pitting, but I don't see any active chemical reaction currently present. Are you saying this coin was not like this before? If it was mine, since I am one of those that do not believe that pure acetone will damage copper coins, I would rinse in Acetone, and put in a protective, none reactive, plastic holder. Jim
Reverse Sorry still using iPhone so looks like I will need to buy new battery charger for camera since I cannot find mine.
Looks to me like pitting due to being buried. Do you know if this is a dug piece? I wouldn't recommend any cleaning. Do you believe the pitting is active? (Is it getting worse?) I would guess the process is stopped.
Thanks Jim and Thad. I cannot remember what state the coin was in previously, as my coins have been unattended for close to 30 yrs. Also Thad you had recommended distilled water, acetone, xylene to me previously on silver. Would you recommend the same on copper or just acetone? I also wanted to know is there a solution for each metal? Since we have silver, copper, nickel, and a multitude of alloys. If so, could I be pointed to links with recommended procedures. Just picked up my acetone & xylene yesterday for test. Been busy with work.
BLS I have no idea where I got it from, was a kid when I got it. Those days exist only in my fond memories, at least the ones I can remember.
