Is there such thing as a 1968 U.S proof mint Coin set that has silver in them?

not intentionally. IF there is one, it's worth major bucks.

Both 1968 Mint Sets and 1968 Proof Sets each contain one 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollar. The Mint Set has one 'D' and the Proof Set has one 'S'.

Philly didn't strike half dollars between 1968 and 1970 inclusive if memory serves.

There are no known off metal strikes of any denominations in 1968.

Just checked my Red Book and you are correct. I'll go back and correct my previous post.

    So are you sure ?

It's important to note that the 1968-1970 Proof Sets DID contain Silver. Not as much as 1964 sets but silver none the less.

My latest calculations show the set to have a bullion melt value of $2.98 with Silver now sitting at $20.11/oz.

The seller of this proof set is incorrect as it wasn’t until 1992 where the half, quarter, dime was 90% coin silver in the proof sets. (special silver sets issued in conjunction with the regular proof cupro-nickel composition set coins)

The Kennedy half dollar in the 1968 set was 40% silver clad, the quarter & dime were cupro-nickel composition.

So in other words the only thing that contains silver is the kennedy the rest doesn't? in other words he lied?

Yep, or he just didn't know any better. I looked at the sellers other auctions and they all look above board so I'm inclined to think he didn't intentionally lie. That's why it's best to know what you're buying when dealing with ebay sellers.

Derek, You should not be dependent on a seller's word. Rather, you should either know or be able to determine the important things about any coins you are considering buying. The information discussed in this thread (which coins contain how much silver in a 1968 Proof Set) can easily be found in the Red Book. If you don't already have a copy of the Red Book you should get one before buying any more coins. (Buy the book before the coin.)

You can purchase a copy of the 2010 Red Book at Amazon for $13.45 here: http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Book-United-States-Coins/dp/0794827667/ref=pd_sim_b_3 .

damn that sucks....oh well it wasn't a bad buy either way i guess...the kennedy has a value of like $3? and the rest well its AU and uncirculated so i guess not bad for 5 bucks :\

Well, I am thoroughly confused now. Are we talking about a US Proof Set? Or a US Mint Set? Either way how are some of the coins AU? And if we are talking about a Proof Set how are any of the coins uncirculated?

Sorry if i confuse you...i am not obviously a very good collector as you can see ha :) In other words it wasn't a bad deal cause the half kennedy would be worth around $3? for the silver? and the rest of the coins are in good condition..so it wasn't a bad deal afterall?

Obliviously, that seller misspoke when he posted that the set contained a silver dime and quarter, if you wanted to be technical you could dispute the auction, unless when you get the coins they actually do have a silver quarter and dime, in that case you would have hit the powerball with your buy.
