This coin seems to have almost, I think, whats called 180* rotation on the tails side. Both sides face the same way when flipped over, not opposite like they are supposed to do. I would like to know if this was a common error... or do I have something unique? They have been in a leather pouch for sometime... which will account for the coloring, I assume . Ive just started researching mycoins any help would be greatly appreciated....thank-you!
Welcome to CoinTalk, Tim. Are you sure your Peace Dollar is genuine? Your coin is lacking in detail, especially on the reverse. And the surfaces have an odd appearance. Have you tested the coin with a magnet? (If the coin is attracted to a magnet it is fake.)
Just checked...lol... didnt think of that... but no it is not attracted to a magnet... so now what? I sure hope it is real... I have 2 other 1922 peace dollars, one of which has the error of the extra ray by the neck/wing of the eagle... all three are different colors. I have had two of them over 20 yrs, sitting in a leather snuff pouch, have had the third about 10 yrs. I also have a 1926, and as soon as I can get it scanned, am pretty sure it also has the ray by the neck/wing error... but its 3 am almost and my eyes could be messin with me. Mainly really curious over the rotation error, and sure hope its not fake. Its pretty nifty.
Hi TIMBERHSTN! On certain coin errors such as your even the best scans and photos aren't enough. If you are going to stay in collecting coins for a long time, I suggest you buy two essential tools which will help you enormously in coming to conclusions about if a coin is fake or real. A coin scale accurate to at least one tenth of a gram and either a digital micrometer or calipers accurate to one tenth of a millimeter. These two inexpensive tools will vastly help you. Have fun and GOOD LUCK.
Thanks for your replies... I will see what I can do about those tools. I know my coins have character...lol... thanks again for the help and advice.
I agree. The coin's surface looks odd in the photo but perhaps it is a scan that is causing that effect.
Okay took some advice and ran it into a coin shop, it weighs 22. 6 grams or something like that and it is a fake. Made somewhere in the orient... I am guessin. LOl, was hopin, but o well... guess I will get to keep a cool souvenir just for chatter sake. Thanks again all!
I should always go with my first instinct and let people like Treashunt talk me into changing my mind.
He stated that it's almost 180% rotation. I don't know what "extreme" means to you but that sounds pretty extreme to me!
She...lol and I didnt know there were counterfeits out there, thats how new to this I am...lol how Niave I am.
We have all been there. You are not alone in this buch of collectors. If it didn't break your bank, well that's great. Someday you'll be able to give advice from what you've just experienced, for sure. My coin scale: JS-150 COST ME ABOUT $20 bucks including shipping. I reccommend it. Hang in there, we are all here for you. This is the right place. Have fun. zeke
