64bn for both. I really like the first one best - seems to have nice color and a better strike. Also like the rim cuds. Also looks like the same variety for both coins.
I was thinking AU55-58 on the first looks like wear on the wreath on the reverse. The obverse looks like it may have some rub at the lock of hair on libertys forehead, but it also looks like weak strike. and 64bn on the second. But what do I know I may need this fella:foot-mouth:
OP did say both were MS. Plus I thought the coin looked familiar. I do a lot more looking than buying.
Yea I saw that after I posted...oops.:bangg: But the wreath still looks to me more like it has wear not weak strike. Is this characteristic of large cents? Or could it be argued this is something like cabinet friction?
I thought I'd throw in one more (last one) to give perspective to the first two. Will post the slabs later today. Exhibit C (also MS):
Funny how tastes differ. While I like the first one a lot—very few marks and a good strike, certainly an attractive coin—I much prefer the color of the 2nd, which to me is richer.
Good calls, grilledporkchop and jerseycat, as far as coming closest to the slabs. The 1st one's a 64, 2nd is a 66 but clearly a low-end one, would probably regrade 65+ IM0 (this one is mine and I paid accordingly for it). The least appealing to me is the 3rd, a 65; can't get past that gash near the mouth. The 64 is very nice but has carbon both obv. and rev.; I'm also a bit suspicious of the luster judging by the photos (esp. rev.). The 66, though softly struck, has no carbon and excellent luster in hand; great eye appeal, I think. A: B: C:
I definitely see what you're seeing on the rev.: the slightly darker, duller spots on the high points of the leaves. I wouldn't consider this cabinet friction, which would be wear, but it could be a little rub (hand grease). Or it could just look that way in the photo; graders can see the luster of the coin in hand.
While I would not call it cabinet friction it does kind of remind you of it. If you look at the second coin I would call that weak strike. The first looks pretty well struck on the reverse. Yep - I would like to see both in hand before I gave a final decision. Some of the darker browns are pretty nice in hand. I have a 1818 62RB that I just can't seem to catch the luster and color of. And I certainly agree on that third coin - that hit is just too distracting.
Nice coins. That n-11 is superb! I was going to guess 63 & 65 -- I suspect the photos don't do either coin's luster justice. Thanks for sharing...
