Probably my best box of halves yesterday, not huge finds by the standards I see here, but got 11 keepers, a 1987P, 2009D (filled a hole), 7 40%ers, 1 1964 and my first franklin half, 1963 woot! The frankie is in bad shape, but I dipped it in acetone to remove some of the junk on it. I know it is just worth bullion, but put it in a 2X2 since it is the first of that type I've found.

Also got a token for the Aurora carousel, looks like this

Probably not worth the $.50 it cost me.

What kind of bank doesn't open until 11 and is only open til 3 on a Friday? Wow... My excitement is suspended in disbelief.

    Nice finds, Con.

EDIT: And now I find out they don't have a machine... awesome. So no bags from them today...

Double Edit... One will allow me to buy bags, the other wont... how peculiar.

I just finished up all the numbers on my first $500 box of Half Dollars, 1000 coins total. It took a bit of time to set the coins out by date, but it was my first box so what the heck. I checked a couple hundred of these coins with my loop, it payed off a little.

    90% x 0
    40% x 5
    Proofs x 2
Not issued for circulation x 2
    DDO/DDR x 2 (out of the 200 I checked with a loop)

1965 x 1 This coin has a DDR on most of the letters.
    1966 x 0
    1967 x 3
    1968 x 1
    1969 x 0
    1970 x 0

    1979-S x 1
    2002-P x 1
    2002-S x 1
    2009 x 1

    Numbers on more common halves
    1971 x 110
    1972 x 62
    1973 x 35
    1974 x 65
    1976 x 128
1977 x 12 One of these coins was a 1977-D and has a DDR on the word DOLLAR
    1978 x 7
    1979 x 11
    1980 x 21
    1981 x 12
    1982 x 7
    1983 x 18
    1984 x 17
    1985 x 8
    1986 x 8
    1988 x 13
    1989 x 14
    1990 x 16
    1991 x 17
    1992 x 19
    1993 x 12
    1994 x 39
    1995 x 38
    1996 x 39
    1997 x 36
    1998 x 31
    1999 x 37
    2000 x 61
    2001 x 96

5 40%, 2 proofs, and 2 NIFC's is a solid box. Congrats and welcome to the addiction.

BTW, the DDR/DDO's you're seeing might just be MD.

    What is an "MD"?

MD means "mechanical doubling" or strike doubling as it is sometimes called. It is completely different from a true doubled die, usually caused by the coin moving while still under pressure from the strike. A true doubled die is present on the die itself. A doubled die is already present on the die BEFORE the strike, a MD or strike double apprears AFTER the coin is struck.

Chances are, especially with the silver and silver clads that it's MD. There are very few 1964-1970 business strikes that have known doubled dies, but a few of the proofs do. The 1977 D could be a true doubled die, since one is documented for that year/mintmark.

See this article to learn to tell the difference: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/OtherFormsOfDoubling.htm

The most common doubled die in the series is the 1974-D DDO (doubled die obverse). It shows up very clearly in "WE TRUST". I've found 6 of them in my roll searching. That would be at least 100,000-150,000 coins!

There are also DDO's for the 1971 D (never found one) the 1972 P (never found one) the 1984 P (one found) and a DDR (doubled die reverse) for the 1973 D.

    Hope this helps-----

If my wife was a brain surgeon I wouldn't be searching rolls for buillon coins, I'd be searching shops/auctions for the sets I'd love to put together.

Picked up 9 rolls today. 1 1942, 1 1958, 7 1964, 7 40%'ers. I also picked up 15 Mercs, 23 IHC's (several before 1890), 17 Buffs and 25 brand new coin albums (assorted, best are 2 of the "Official US mint" Dansco style albums that retail around $20) for a total of $50.

Silver value Merc's $21.57, silver value of halves $85.30, $25 New albums retail total $170 (I know they are not worth near that resale), IHC's value hard to estimate, Buffs not worth much.

Not getting rich but good "value" day.

On another note: I am donw to only needing 4 proof Kennedy halves to complete my "pulled from circulation or traded for face value" set. Anyone have extra 1985S, 1995S, 2007S, or 2010S halves to trade?

    Thanks!

    Erin

    Sampson,
May you have continued good luck and most importantly, fun.

But, two words come to mind when i read your post.....ROAD TRIP!
Just kidding. Enjoy the search and keep having fun with your family while doing it. My 5 year old son loves to search with me.

Just keep in mind that they shouldn't really be dealing with a lot of coins...if they have a cut and they search and touch coins often might get an infection. I've seen it happen before. Just saying =)

box of dimes skunk again :(
