Like radar notes I've been wanting to find one forever and like older bills like before the 90s before they changed everything and like rare serial numbers low serial numbers and star notes like when I go to the bank what should I ask for?

    Thanks in advance CT Community

Like coins, you just take your chances. Older banknotes are collected by banks and then destroyed (at least that's what they do in Canada). I've even tried buying their stack designated to be returned but no dice. Once they enter the banking system they aren't put back into circulation.

If you're lucky, you can get something in a stack that has been overlooked.

I've been buying mine from ebay. The majority are slabbed but I did pick up some older Canadian Chartered Banknotes raw.

not all banks in the US will refuse to let you buy their stack of worn or unwanted notes. MOst tellers in the US will glady sell you their stack. Because of the process they must use to send those notes back, its a pain in the rear for them. If you ask a teller to buy there stack of old and worn notes - you might be surprised.

I agree. My bank teller @Wells Fargo keeps older currency for me and when I go to the bank she lets me know what she has. I think though, do not bring them back to the same bank/teller.

You guys are so lucky! I've been to about 30 local banks and I got the same story. Once it's in the bank, it has to be sent to be destroyed! Must be a totally different policy at least in this city.

I've found that the more sets of eyes you have looking for rare notes, the better your chances. I try to educate all of my family and friends to look at their paper money for unusual serial numbers and star notes, and it's paid off time and time again. It's a great feeling being able to pick up star notes at face value.

At the banks around me tellers are only allowed a certain amount of cash in there drawers. They also cant 'sell' old cash bank to the valut unless its a certain amount. Say this amount is $200. If they only have $195 in old notes, thats $195 thats tied up, that is taking away from the amount of usable cash in their drawer.

I agree! All my coworkers look for star notes in all the notes they get. They find less then i do, but they still find them. They all also know about any note that is pre-1995. They bring me any they find. I trained a few on special serials, but for the most part, the average person pays little attention to the serial numbers.

So I should go to the bank and ask for what?

What's the old stack of bills called and how would I get them I would buy every note different denominations?

my tellers call it their 'mutilated money' pile. This stack will include any notes deemed unworthy for further use, but will also include older notes.

Do you have to buy the whole pile? And about how much is it usually

That largely depends on the teller. This forum used to have a member where the tellers would let him search their pile and buy what he wanted. And he would always reward the tellers for his success - a key point i think.

I have asked a teller at a local ice cream shop if he could search his $5's for star note's, he said he didnt think there were any cuz he has never seen them but looked anyway and found one nice and uncirculated of couse though there was no line so i wasnt holding up anyone. I also have a teller at my bank that holds things for me when he finds it, he never knew any of this stuff exsisted. i myself never knew about the unwanted stack, ill have to ask my teller this friday about it and see what he has if he has em.
