Thanks for all the great info. I have a 1959 mint set with a type B Washington Quarter. I pulled it out and there was the 1959P type 2 Franklin half. If your article had not come up I would never had known. The Washington quarter is at least a 66 the half has FBL and is somewhat prooflike. Again Thanks. Darrow

I was looking for info on type B Washington Quarters. Yours comments turned up in a search showed up. I pulled out a 1959 mint set that I had and it had the type 2 Franklin with FBL and semi proof like a great looking coin. Thanks for your info! Darrow

Not sure if you found what you were looking for or not, but here's one thread that might help:

When I first became aware of the variety a while back, I pulled out all my Franklins and took double and triple looks. Set them aside and checked them again. But, Nope, didn't have any. If I sold a proof set with one, I'll never know. Pretty much got rid of the duplicate halves and working my way downward in denomination now.

    Great thread though !

He probably didn't. Dealers can really only be concerned about marketable inventory. Who is interested in having stock that may never leave the shelf ?

Kind of hard to tell from that pic, but I believe it is a type 1. I have been picking up type 2s in NGC holders for some great prices. Most dealers dont know about these.

Sort of looks like both to me. And I think it is. Otherwise once known as type 3 and now known as the class III doubled die. How is the dot to the left of E in EPU? That has the widest doubling on the doubled die one.. One clue to me is when I try to count the feathers and I can't do it.

One of the things I find very interesting about this doubled die was that its use in production was deliberate and no accident. Before its first use, it was buffed to remove signs of doubling leaving scratches. Then it was taken out of service and rebuffed, resulting in new new scratches, erasing some old scratches and leaving some original scratches intact.

  16. This is a 1958 Franklin. I thought the Type 3 and the doubled die was only seen on the 1959s. TC

TC - your coin is a type 1. Counting the feathers proves it.

I stand corrected. I really should not try to identify varieties from pix. But that dot really looked doubled to me.
